The two predominant religions is Tarantis are Pudage, the religion of the Paldorans, whose
chief god is
Adorak Tau and Guedankst, the religion of the
Gismesh, whose chief goddess is
Selanii. These religions are followed by 45% and 40% of the
poulation respectively.
The rulers of Tarantis have always encouraged religious freedom in spite of (or perhaps because
of) the predominance of these two religions and there are eighteen 'official' religions
practised in Tarantis. An 'official' religion has to have at least hundred worshippers and
a dedicated place of worship and is accorded certain rights in law including protection
for its temple. The most popular minority religions are worship Tolna Budane (Lawful Good
God of Light), Zin Naou (Chaotic Evil God of Disease), Polna Ku (Chaotic Neutral Goddess of
Desire) and Learden Su (Lawful Neutral God of Knowledge) whose chief worshippers are a
group of sages known as the Seekers of Light. The remaining religions are perhaps better
considered 'sects' and may have less than the 100 worshippers that were required when they
acquired 'official' status. Sadly the Temple of Athena must
fall into this category having but one cleric and no paladins.
It should be noted that there is nothing in law preventing 'unofficial' religion and some
citizens and a lot of travellers worship privately in their own homes. The worshippers of
The Maid for instance meet above a baker's shop. Very few
religions are actually illegal but the worship of
Set is banned as is the worship of the Skandik gods such as
Odin which for some reaason is considered a heretical version
of Pudage (although the two religions are completely unalike on the surface).
