Athena

Goddess of Wisdom, Battle, Justice and Knowledge

The Temples of Athena are found on Oerth wherever there are glimmers of 'civilisation'. She is a battle goddess whose paladins are renowned but also a protector of knowledge and wisdom. She sees war as a last resort when it is the only way to restore peace and justice. Her holy symbol is the owl. She has been less inclined to physically incarnate herself than some of the other gods and goddesses of Oerth but her clerics say she has no need to do so. For example three major assaults on her temple on the promontory in Damkina Bay have been repelled with the armies and navies sent against it ravaged by misfortune before they came close to their prize.

Athena is the patron goddess of Zothay. The defeat of Zothay's armies by the Skandiks did not substantially damage her standing within that city.

Her clerics say that Amala, Goddess of the Seas, worshipped by some sea-going races, is just another aspect of Athena. Amala is depicted as a faintly blue-skinned sea-maiden and certain of Athena's temples will have an alcove where she can be worshipped in this form. Athena is not a jealous goddess and will allow clerics of other gods and goddesses who share her concerns to study at her temples.
