When the Gismesh fled across the Winedark Sea they brought with them the
worship of their own gods. Their chief Goddess is Selanii, Goddess of the Sea.
Their religion promotes the cohesiveness of its adherents but it is unusual in
that it denies the existence of an afterlife. It also regards living
sacrifice as unnecessary and human sacrifice an abomination. As a result of
their beliefs Selanii's clerics are particularly active in good works and keen
to right all wrongs while the sinner and sinned against still live.
The other aspect of interest in the worship of Selanii is its very precise
rites which must be followed according to an exact religious calendar.
Its most famous rite is on
the Day of the Fish, its High Holy Day.
The unusual public dance performed by the
followers of Selanii on the Day of the Fish has become
something of a tourist attraction and is one of those occasions
when the forces of law find it necessary to make some
arrests. Not only do the curious come to watch the dance,
but members of opposing religions often attend the dance to
harass the dancers and other believers resulting in a somewhat chaotic
public occasion.
