The presence of a Northern religion such as the worship of Pelor
on the Gherant Coast might be considered an anomaly but the
halfelven founders of
Westcrown put a lot of thought into their early statecraft.
They were in agreement that Westcrown should have a state religion in order to bind the population together and act as a
stabilising force on society. They wanted to abandon the Elven gods as the whole thrust of their new colony was that it should
encompass human dynamism and therefore human gods were thought more appropriate. The worship of these gods, however, had to have proven to have created a society which was historically friendly to the Elves.
M'pimpi was seen as too much of a nature goddess whereas their society was to be city based. They also didn't particularly want a local
religion which might have power centers outside their colony.
The worship of Pelor fitted the bill nicely. They had no interest in other human interpretations of what such worship meant and
in any case were only dimly aware of the revival of the Church of Pelor in the North. The nearest manifestation of that church
was the Church of the Black Sun in the former Pelorean colony of
Tanturak which they recognised as an obvious corruption of the original.
They therefore based their 'new' religion entirely on ancient Elven manuscripts which referenced the
Pelorean Empire of old. This they hoped would produce a purer version of the religion and as a result they officially endorsed many other gods which were seen as part of the Pelorean pantheon at that time. They also wanted to
include a 'Chief Evil God' in the pantheon and, wishing to avoid all mention of Malgoth (see the
Great Cataclysm), chose Asmodeus for whom they had little regard. After some theological thought they downgraded him to a 'fallen angel' to make him seem less powerful.
At the time all these decisions were thought clever and wise but the consequences of some can be seen to have played out over Westcrown's
long history in unexpected ways.
