The Pelorean Empire is a legendary human empire said to have existed before the
Great Darkness. Legend has it that although its core was centred
on the area now covered by
Cambria,
Reetland and
Sankhar it also encompassed colonies on the other side of the
Blue Sea.
Much has been written about this ancient empire but sadly a lot of this has been based on the cycle of ballads
composed by Heigero the Bard in the seventh century whose chief source seems to have been his own colourful
imagination. It is true, however, that many valuable objects of exquisite workmanship have been found buried in
the ground over a wide area but centred on Reetland. Craftsman say these seem to be human in design but incorporate
techniques lost to current generations. Also in many cities when foundations are dug for a new building ancient
stones can be found of impressive size but clearly part of an unfamiliar architecture. In Cambria such ruins have
only been found at
Pell's Hold and
Ragenport.
The tale told by the Pelorean church is that the Empire was blessed by Pelor and great temples were built to
him in the chief cities. In the later days of the Empire, however, the people became enamoured by forbidden knowledge and they turned to
wickedness. Pelor then withdrew his blessing and the Great Darkness fell.
In more recent times at least two of the Cambria/Reetland wars have at least partly been caused by
these legends fuelling Reetland's imperial ambitions.
