Abadar is the Lawful Neutral God of Cities, Law, Merchants and Wealth.
His teaching (through his holy book
the Order of Numbers) is that well-regulated trade is the key to a happy and thriving civilisation. His followers number city guards, aristocrats, merchants and lawyers but also the comfortably off members of the middle class or working class in any
town or city. His clerics may also double as judges, lawyers and clerks and are generally respected for being
even-handed and honest while his temples may also double as banks and hence have high security. His worship, like that of
Iomedae, originated in the ancient civilisations surrounding the Eastern Ocean.
In Far Sudland his main temple is at Jiah on the
Gherant Coast and is popular amongst the members of the
College of Advocates which has its home there. He is also the patron God of the
Order of the Golden Chalice which is based in
Westcrown.
Abadar sees the ideal society as a meritocracy since a decent standard of living for the whole population
increases trade. He also frowns on slavery which his priests teach undermines that ideal. Despite the publicly
taught standards of his following, however, there have been many cases where temples have mistaught the words
of the Order of Numbers and tried to justify an altogether more exploitative and unequal society. Such
temples tend to be expelled as heretics from the faith if such charges can be proven.
The clerics of Abadar wear white tunics which frequently have gold and silver highlights to indicate the
wealth of their order. His priests are encouraged to charge for their services and indeed to run businesses
to increase the riches of their temples. The only time they might waive their charges might be in a public health emergency such as a war or pandemic.
