In the legendary past the when the peoples of
Oerth were assailed by the Markrabs they turned to new gods. The human population of the
Isle of the Blest chose to worship a single
goddess whose name was Amfilos, Goddess of the Moon. Her worshippers believed that she
spent her days beneath the ocean so water became of particular religious significance
to them. For this reason when the time of the Markrabs came to an end and in thanksgiving
the people wished to build Amfilos a temple they chose to build it under the surface
of the Lake of the Gods.
Amfilos's followers spend the night of the full moon in prayer. They are only allowed to
speak while the moon is up and indeed are only ever allowed to speak to fellow worshippers.
They believe that silver and water are holy and baptise new converts symbolising the journey
of the Goddess into and out of the ocean. The religious symbol of Amfilos is a silver
crescent moon with its horns pointing upwards.
The strictness of her religion has led the majority of the islanders to turn away from
Amfilos over the years. In particular the heritical cult of
Enfilos, the Moon Demon, has arisen which has persecuted
the followers of the older religion.
Despite others seeing the religion of Amfilos as having exclusive tendencies her followers,
although generally passive and retiring,
are bidden to offer aid to anyone who needs it. For communication with non-believers the
Priests of Amfilos have developed a sign language which many on the island know.
