Lake of the Gods

It is said that after the War of Domination such was the devastation wrought by the Markrabs that only pockets of the races of the Oerth survived. One of the first areas to recover any semblance of civilisation was on the Isle of the Blest and the people of that Isle, wishing to give thanks for their deliverance from the Markrabs, erected a temple to the moon goddess, Amfilos.

Fearing the Markrabs return the temple was built underwater and it is said that Amfilos herself helped in its construction creating a great air bubble under the lake. Since this was the first temple built to one of the Younger Gods many of the Lawful and Good Gods who were not jealous of one another were present at its dedication and it became a site of pilgrammage for many faiths. The Gods themselves arranged for the protection of the temple and its is said that for the first thousand years of its existence it could not be seen from above the Lake. It is said also that a portal was created in the Lake to the Elemental Plane of Water and that water elementals will attack anyone seeking to harm the Temple. The Lake today is a shimmering blue colour and there is always movement on the surface even when there is no wind. The temple can be glimpsed below cliffs at the southern end of the Lake.

At the dedication of the temple a prophecy was made that one day there would arise from the lake a force that would rebalance Oerth away from the evils sown by the Markrabs. For this reason many evil religions keep watch on the Lake fearing what might arise from it.
