Sea Rune

About three thousand years ago a tribe of Amazons stumbled across an ancient harbour on the east coast of Roglaros. The harbour was obviously created by an advanced civilisation (some say the Markrabs) and included an ancient but very worn statue of a humanoid (which may be the only known representation of a Markrab if indeed it was created by them). For over two thousand years the Amazons held the town until the Skandiks started raiding the coasts.

At first the Skandiks left the Amazons alone and settled in Ossary along the coast. When the Skandiks drew up the courage to challenge the Amazons initially they were easily repulsed. It was only when the Amazons had sufficient hubris to fight a naval battle against the Skandiks that they were defeated. The Skandiks which occupied the town were independent of Ossary for many years but eight hundred years ago a concerted attempted by the Warlord of Quitak to drive the Skandiks from the coast led Sea Rune to seek aid from Ossary. Unable to send troops in time the High Priest in Ossary prayed to Odin who responded by sending his son Thor to defeat the Warlord's forces. The men of Sea Rune erected a great temple to Thor but recognised in a bloodoath their debt to Ossary. The village was greatly weakened by attacks from the Orcs migrating out of Dearthwood five hundred years ago and again in the Gnoll Times. In the latter attack much of the village was destroyed and was only rebuilt with help from Ossary which this time was obtained only after the Sea Rune men swore an oath of fealty to the King of Ossary.

The security of the village is not helped by the fact that the Amazons retreated only as far as a strange metallic castle nearby (again a structure believed to be a work of the Markrabs). The superstitious inhabitants of Sea Rune will not even approach this castle. On the other hand the Amazons frequently pick off Skandik hunters in the wild. In each skirmish the Amazons declare that Sea Rune is really theirs.
