Amazons

Amazons are not a widespread race in the northern Wilderlands as they homeland is believed to be far to the south, so the details below are derived from what is known about the tribe living near the town of Sea Rune. This tribe appears to have settled in Sea Rune about three thousand years ago and to have lived there until driven out by the Skandiks about nine hundred years ago.

Amazons are a society of female warriors and are among the finest hand to hand combatants on Oerth. They certainly seem to have the edge over the Skandiks when not outnumbered and were only driven from Sea Rune after losing a naval battle. Amazons do not tolerate males in their society. When they wish to mate they raid nearby settlements for male captives and then release them into the wild when they have finished with them. Male babies are also left in the wild although it is clear that other cultures (notably the Elves) have been rescuing the rejected children. It is believed the original Amazons were raven-haired but the mixing of blood with captured Skandiks means that many are now blonde or red-haired.

The Amazons worship a moon goddess, Thiris, who many sages believe to be the old Orichalian goddess Demeter. They keep pet lions who also accompany them into battle. The Amazons disdain armour and rely on their amazing speed of movement and magic bracers for defence. Although they practice martial skills for several hours each day they also have time for the arts and indeed consider themselves a highly moral and civilised society. Other races find them hard to love, however, not only for their attitude to males but also because they keep captured females as slaves, disdaining any manual labour themselves.
