Although both Arcuso of the Society of the Morning Sunrise and Lyrisa of the Society of the Morning Sunrise would disagree there exists a third equally popular dissident philosopher based in Restov, known simply as Lynx. Lynx owes her popularity, as she is well aware, solely to her quick wits and charm. Unlike the other two she has not founded a Society but instead sells minor magical charms at her meetings. She also has a string of rich patrons who are charmed and entertained by her, not to mention some who sponsor her simply to keep Arcuso and Lyrisa in their place. Although her scholarship is not nearly as deep as say Arcuso she has some claim to be taken seriously as a historian although she is much given to embellishing the historical record to make a better narrative. Her philosophy is much more accessible and easier to understand than her rivals being based on 'enlightened self interest'. She is also not averse to 'good works' particularly if she can get one over on her two competitors. For instance Arcuso and Lyrisa founded an orphanage with the idea of getting the orphans to look after stray and unwanted animals thus bringing comfort to both. Lynx took the idea and developed it founding Rania Peruso's Home for Unusual Children where her acolyte Rania, a promising wizard, looks after 'gifted' children while helping them care for abandoned magical animals. It is undeniable that the home has had a beneficial effect on the animals and the children but a regular series of incidents involving both has led to some complications with the Watch and a desire to relocate to somewhere outside of Restov. Lynx of course has no intention of following Arcuso and Lyrisa to Iredar but the Home for Unusual Chidren might well relocate there. Rania, despite being a follower of Lynx, is also a friend of Lyrisa so the Home might well end up on the shores of Lake Silverstep. |
