Miredor

Pel

The Pel are a Phemaire ('People of the Sea') tribe who migrated west to Miredor at the time of the Great Darkness. There they inhabited the river valleys of the Usira and the Suriva and the surrounding limestone hills (now collectively known as the Pel Hills). Although this area lacks the rainfall of the more westerly dominions the area is still fertile and the Pel were used to using irrigation in their cultivation. They were also able to supplement their diet with game from the hills and fish from the rivers.

The Pel grew to love their land and after the sundering of Miredor they became one of the Seven Dominions calling their land (imaginatively) 'Pel'. They are monogamous but retain an ancient matrilineal kinship pattern whereby a man on marriage will join the houehold of his wife which is presided over by a (generally elderly) matriarch. High priestesses are at the pinnacle of a loose caste system and they officiate at temples at which many gods are worshipped but the most important has become Ardi, Lord of Earth and Plants who the Elves equate with Elebrin_Liothiel.

The Pel army is small but effective. Their tactics revolve round well-trained units of spearmen. Although slavery is generally outlawed in Pel society war prisoners may be held as slaves although they are generally well treated and have the option of being ransomed or eventually buying their own freedom.
