The Heart of the Earth is a great crystal said to have been a gift to
Athena from the goddess
Gaia.
It was enchanted by Athena and given to her temple in
Kelnore. The priests of Athena could
see visions in the crystal of any matter relating to the business of the temple from
missions of individual clerics to the campaigns of its paladins. When relations between
the rulers of Kelnore and the Temple of Athena were good as they were for much of the
Golden Age of its Empire this gave a great strategic advantage to the Empire. The Heart of
the Earth survived the destruction of Kelnore and resurfaced in the Temple of Athena in
the long-lost capital city of the Dragon Empire.
Although only a minor faction in the city for much of its history the Temple came to the
fore in the War of Magicks when the followers of the Gods fought the followers of the Markrabs.
It was in this war that Athena became the pre-eminent Olympian god. But the degeneracy at
the heart of the Empire still remained and despite the best efforts of the clerics of
Athena to influence the city away from evil in the end the city embraced it to its own destruction.
The fate of the Heart is not recorded but it is believed to lie in the ruins of that
lost city.
