When men first came to the Vast Lake they were looking to found a safe base for their
exploration of the northern Wilderlands. Their spirits rose when they espied in the distance
the isolated isle of
Damkina but the water elementals that inhabited the lake would
not let any approach the isle which they said was a holy site. The famous bard Triola, however,
sang so beautifully for the elementals that they let her and her friends pass and found an
encampment on the isle. The warning from the elementals that the site was holy was swiftly
forgotten. When the encampment became a small village which soon became a
town looking to build temples, however, the gods sent many disturbing portents to the inhabitants which
mirrored a great debate in the heavens.
It would appear that the island was a site of great divine power and those worshipped on the
site would receive a boost to their divinity out of proportion to the number of worshippers.
None of the major gods would therefore let another god have a temple on the island and there
were many threats to stir up the local barbarian tribes to destroy the settlement. In the end
Athena brokered a compromise suggesting that a temple should
be erected to an imaginary god
Allworthy who should represent all Gods. Once the gods had
agreed this, however, Athena spoke of the disadvantages of the cult they had just founded
and pleaded that the city should also be under the protection of a real god. To disarm the
arguments against this she proposed
Glor'Diadel a minor godling of paladins.
Now the gods were all jealous of each other but none saw Glor'Diadel as a rival and further
he was also much admired (or despised) for his straightforwardness and honesty. All the gods
therefore believed
him when he swore not to abuse the power of the site. Two temples were therefore built on
the island and
the ruler was charged with ensuring that no further temples would ever be built there.
