The founders of Westcrown had from the beginning of their settlement already spied out the site of Coren,
which has a commanding presence overlooking the Miankku valley, as ideal for a military fort to guard against an potential incursion from
Rahadoum. In -1065 the foundations of Coren castle were laid and even before it was finished the potential
of the site as a centre of trade became obvious. In 1036 the first dwellings outside the castle walls were built and the noble halfelven
Silverarrow family moved into the castle.
Today the main city has a stable population of 25,000. There are, however, a further 5,000 souls in the 'Lower Town' which is situated over
a mile from the castle and nearly 800' lower in elevation. Another 2,000 individuals live in 'Coren Docks', a small walled town actually
situated several miles away on the Miankku River itself.
Closely allied with Khari Coren became the second city to declare its independence from Westcrown in -172.
The 'Lords of Coren' are still the Silverarrow family and they are still responsible for the defence of the city, running both
its regular army and navy and also a highly respected ranger service. The day to day running of the city is, however, the job of
an elected mayor who controls the City Watch. The City has its own semi-independent branch of the
Order of the Golden Chalice and sponsors the
Church of Pelor as its official religion. Its policy is one of relgious tolerance,
however, and a variety of temples are present in the city including many of those expelled from Rahadoum.
Both the Church of Asmodeus and the
Church of Mammon have a presence in the city but have relatively minor influence
compared to most religions.
Crime and corruption are much rarer in Coren then Westcrown although both the Lower Town and the Coren Docks are local hotspots. Despite
this both these smaller population centres are vibrant centres of trade in their own right particularly with regard to trade goods from the local indigenous populations.
