Any traveller to Tarantis is advised to quickly appraise themselves of the peculiarities
of the Tarantian Laws and
Justice System.
As far as the Law is concerned there are two areas to watch out for: Laws that are not
necessary common to other communities and the lack of law in areas where other other
communities might have legislated.
Laws to watch out for in Tarantis are:
Harming the Meriem Catwolf people is considered treason.
Trying to convert members of the Pudage or Guedankst religions to another religion is
illegal (even to another 'official religion').
Damaging or thieving from the Pudage or Guedankst temples is considered treason.
Duelling within the city walls (or Tarantine towns or villages) is illegal.
Belonging to a perscribed organisation is treasonous e.g. Assassin's Guild, religion of
Set.
Sedition it should be noted is legally ill-defined and most people realise it means
'saying things that make the Taran or other high ranking officials uncomfortable'.
On the other hand you need to be aware that the following are not illegal:
Belonging to the Thieves' Guild or Pirate Brotherhood (neither of which are proscribed
organisations).
Killing non-humans. In fact non-humans have no rights whatsoever unless they
are on an official list of those who have been granted the same rights as humans. Originally
this list mentioned just Elves and Dwarves. Until a hundred years ago killing a Halfling, Gnome,
Goblin
or Orc within Tarantis was perfectly legal but if they were a servant or slave you were liable
for compensation to their master. These latter races have now been granted rights but no other
races are on the list.
Needless to say discriminating against non-humans (or women or any other group) is not
illegal.
As in most cities of Oerth slavery is not illegal.
