Tabaxi are agile, intelligent, cat-like creatures who roam the civilised nations in brightly coloured
caravans. If they have a home north of the Blue Sea it is in
Sambia where they have permanent camps but
their real home they say is deep in the jungles of the South. Nevertheless they have a place on the
Council of Sambia and fewer and fewer Tabaxi are including a visit to the southern jungles in their
eternal wandering lifestyle because they feel the road south has become too dangerous. The 'wandering'
Tabaxi that we see are simply one clan of their original homeland they say; the other clans do
not share their wanderlust.
Tabaxi have not always been popular in Cambria and for two periods in its
history (627-777 and 846-933) they have been banned from the country. This is largely to do with
their insatiable curiosity and desire to examine interesting objects. Tabaxi do not so much 'steal'
objects as borrow them and then forget to give them back. They are quite happy for you to search
the big trunk in their caravans that they keep such objects in and and for you yo reclaim your possessions.
Both the times they were banned from Cambria both
came about when the object taken by the Tabaxi was magical and very valuable, the original owners
were Lords of the realm and the Tabaxi let a third party 'reclaim' the object.
In recent years, however, the Tabaxi have been trying hard to live down their reputation and
occasionally ask before acquiring an object to examine. They earn their living as tinkers
and entertainers and also deal in information to the extent they will buy meals and drinks
to satisfy their curiosity and demand meals and drinks if you want to satisfy yours. These days
they are popular with common folk who are minded to think that their entertainment value far
exceeds the risk they pose. It has to be said they are less popular with rich merchants and
lords. A sad recent development is that they have been targeted by the
King's Men and
Geogoths as their trunks always hold either a magic item or more likely something
that just looks as if it could be magic. So prevalent has been their persecution that the Sambian
Ambassador is believed to have made representations to the King.
