In the last five years in many towns and villages groups of men (they are almost always exclusively male)
have arisen whose purpose (so they say) is to support the King. They have a long list of pet hates
which include foreigners ('plotting against us), southerners ('not like us'), magic users ('devil-worshipping cultists'),
women ('should know their place'), women clerics in particular ('not natural'), other races ('can't be trusted') and last
but not least 'rebel Marcher Lords'.
Needless to say in the provinces of the 'rebel Marcher Lords' the King's Men have very little support and those that
do support them tend to be treated as low-level criminals for whom a few nights in the dungeons would help clear
their minds. In some provinces, however, they have become more than a nuisance taking over local militias for example
with the local Lords reluctant to intervene for fear of looking unpatriotic in the eyes of the King. It is not
known for certain if the King himself had any part in the rise of the King's Men and at times he has distanced himself
from their actions. They appear, however, to be receiving some a certain amount of
financial backing from some source even if it is only a few coins slipped to the local layabouts so they can
spend all day drinking outside the tavern and harassing passersby.
Perhaps the King's Men's most obnoxious habit is reporting those they dislike to the
Geogoths who inevitably
use the excuse of 'concerned citizens have reported you' to rough people up.
Indeed they are not above attacking strangers themselves if they can find them alone
with the odds heavily in their favour.
