The Kings of Cambria have always had a Court Magician. Perhaps the most notorious was Aderlard who died trying to stop
the Rift forming according to his friends. According to other accounts and popular belief
it was his magical experiment, conducted on the borders of the realm because he knew it was dangerous, that caused
the Rift to form in the first place. Ironically the more paranoid the Kings have become about magic the more magical assistance they have
needed so the Court Magician in now in charge of a large number of Magicians (thought to be about 100) whose
main job is to detect hostile magic and to secure the Court and
Pell's Hold in general against magical attack.
Many of the King's Magicians are known to be unhappy about their duties as public servants but for most of them it is
the only way they can continue to practice magic legally. Having outlawed magic (in all the provinces except those of the
Marcher Lords who have used ancient treaties to avoid ratifying the law) the King appreciates that he has
left his Lords defenceless in the face of magical attack. He therefore hires out the King's Magicians to the
Lords so that they can create magical wards around their castles and set up other magical defences.
The shortage of magicians in the realm mean that the King's Magicians are unable to provide support for
the Geogoths either in identifying magic items in the field or in defending
them from attacks from the
Red Thorns.
Note that unlike in say
Sankhar there is no tradition in Cambria of arcane magic users being used in
support of the army. This is partly because this job has traditionally been given to the Pelorean clergy
and partly because of the distaste within many human cultures for fireballing fellow human beings.
There is no such distaste for using arcane magic on those races seen as monsters (whether humanoid or not)
and it is known that some ranger units have an arcane magic capability.
