The Hyenas are the much feared secret police of Tammarik. Although originally a group of spy's created by the current Wazir's father the present day ruler of Tammarik has used them to crush any dissent to his rule. The Wazir has a Council to advise him but this almost exclusively represents the wealthiest of the citizens of Tammarik leaving the poor without a voice. Rather than address this ticking time bomb the Wazir has sought to head off any political challenge to his rule with threats, imprisonment and assassinations. In 1118 the old King of Sankhar, Malic, sent a delegation to the Wazir tactfully telling him to moderate his behaviour. the Wazir responded by coming to an agreement with the Hyenas previous enemies, the Cult of the Long Night, effectively outsourcing any assassinations. This agreement lasted until a change in the Cult's leadership in 1127. The current King of Sankhar, Sigor, is carefully monitoring the actions of Hyenas in Tammarik so their excesses have been scaled back in recent years. In truth, however, a visit from the Hyenas is generally enough to deter most of the Wazir's would be challengers. As the body responsible for the safety of the Wazir the Hyenas have also had to consider the renewed threat which the Cult of the Long Night pose to his wellbeing. It is also not only the Wazir that the Cult is interested in and members of the Hyenas themselves have been targeted. The Hyenas are mainly recruited from the military and are well rewarded for their devotion. | ||
