Cult of the Long Night

The Cult of the Long Night is a nihilist group of assassins which operates in many of the cities surrounding the Blue Sea. In origin it appears to have been an offshoot of the Servants of the Real Fire who, however, vehemently deny any connection with the Cult.

The Cult, it has to be said, worships one of the two gods of the religion of the Servants, Malkora, the god of the Servants of the Blue Flame and regards the 'Book of Malkora' as their holy book. They do, however, claim to have other secret writings which expand on the Book of Malkora and show that god in a different light, not evil but the true saviour of humanity. The cult has contempt for all other races and hates Elves in particular.

The Cult's initial proselytising stresses the evils of life in the cities and offers the convert a new religion which initially never mentions the name of the Cult or the true name of its God. Once drawn in new converts find it very difficult to leave (alive). The Cults goals appear to be to destroy civilisation and to bring about a new Great Darkness (hence the Cult's name). Only by doing so, they say, will a new earthly paradise be created (eventually).

The Cult operates a strict hierarchy and members only know their immediate senior in this hierarchy. Assassins may not know why their target has to die, only that the Cult has ordered it. Targets tend to be City officials, prominent people, diplomats or Elves. The Cult is unsurprisingly banned in most countries bordering the Blue Sea but seems to flourish almost anywhere the Servants of the Real Flame are popular. Because of its targeting of Elves the Cult has had little success in Miredor where it has been ruthlessly surpressed.
