A Magewright is a craftsman who enhances their work by magic. Both Dwarven and particularly Elven craftsmen
have been doing this as a matter of course for thousands of years but human society has tended to focus on
using magic to produce objects of power rather than mundane usefulness. Magewrights typically know a tiny number
of spells (1 - 3) which are all directly related to their craft. They also tend to cast these spells by ritual
whether or not this is standard practice by other magic using professions.
The Guild was founded in
317 (Cambrian Reckoning) when a group of craftsmen in the
Reetland capital of
Coranan decided that forming an elite guild of the craftsmen that used magic would
enhance their standing in society and hopefully have favourable effect on the prices they could charge for their goods. Those applying for membership of the Guild must first have served an apprenticeship in one of the craft
guilds and also pass a test in aptitude for magic. Full membership is not granted until the applicant can
demonstrate that he can cast the relevant spells for his particular craft and has produced a number of pieces of work
that satisfy the Guild's standards.
The Guild has a small research arm that has built up a useful collection of new spells for craftsmen that do not need
much magical power to cast. Although the Guild researchers have had a number of mishaps over the years they tend to
be the sort that can be cleared up with a mop and brush and rarely come to the public's attention. As a result
when Reetland cracked down on the practice of magic in 838 the Guild's practices were barely affected although like
other magic users they are required to record the use of all the arcane spells they cast. It should be noted, however,
that the Guild craftsmen cast both arcane and divine spells depending on what they see as useful for their work.
