Coranan
Coranan is the capital of Reetland and universally aclaimed as one of the most civilised and crime free cities north of the Blue Sea. The air of civilisation in the city owes much to the public works, (including ornamental and drinking fountains and street lighting) constructed by the Honourable Fellowship of Artificers. The lack of crime owes much to the streets being patrolled by the Red Guard whose base is on the outskirts of the city and whose integrity is such that only the very rich can afford to bribe them. There is also a tacit agreement between the City Council and the Thieves Guild (who also have their headquarters in the city) that their members will not operate on the streets of the capital.
If Coranan seems small for a capital city of such a prosperous nation as Reetland it is because having rebuilt its walls (which now stand at 20 feet) once the Reetlanders decided to limit further city growth and instead build a new twin city at Lindheim five miles to the south which in effect has become the commercial district for Coranan and has grown to exceed it in population. Coranan University is also sited there. Although Lindheim stands on the main East-West road much of its trade is routed via the River Thard and Corananan/Lindheim is served by four dock areas at Coranan itself, Eldin,. Kuseme and Lagwain. These (as the Thieves Guild seem to have noted) are all outside the Coranan's walls.
Despite the absence of overt racism Coranan is one of the least diverse cities in the Northern Kingdoms with few Southerners choosing to live there, few Dwarf or Elf residents, and all other races being a rarity. This may be due to in part to the overwhelming presence of the Pelorean Church exemplified by its magnificent cathedral and many other churches. In fact Coranan bylaws state that no other religion may perform formal religious services within the City walls. There is also an absence of poverty within the city walls and the crowded streets of the west side of the City where historically the poor use to live are now mainly inhabited by craftsmen and their workshops. Instead those with poorly paid jobs tend to live in the surrounding villages or even Lindheim. Begging is banned within the city walls but the Pelorean Church operate a number of almshouses in the surrounding villages.Although the crime rate is low the Coranan courts are usually very busy both with civil cases and with crimes of the upper classes such as fraud. This is partly due to King Saradoc's ongoing crusade against corruption. In any case it is a fact that the Litigants' Guild own one of the most imposing buildings in the capital. Th King himself owns a surprisingly modest townhouse in the wealthier quarter but spends much of his time when not performing his state duties at his private estates just outside Lindheim.
