Mountain Hall is a large dwarven city whose entrance is on the southern slopes of the Ered Augrim. Originally a colony of Ironhold it achieved independence from that city nearly 2500 years ago in the midst of the Great Darkness. A strong and secure location, it has never been taken although many battles have been fought before its gates. A dwarven settlement has stood on the site since before the founding of the Pelorean Empire when smaller human kingdoms lay just to the south. At the beginning of the Great Darkness, however, the Dwarves expanded the hold to trade with the Giants who now inhabited the Cambrian plains. When the Giants retreated into the North the Dwarves returned to trading with the new human kingdoms and the presence of such a reliable trading partner and ally on its border greatly helped Cambria survive its initial diffculties. Cambria in turn repaid its debt to the dwarves in the First, Second and Third Northern Wars. The sack of Ironhold in 511 (Cambrian Reckoning) led to a large increase in the population of Mountain Hall which, in present day, exceeds 40,000. The Kings of Mountain Hall have proved shrewd rulers and currently have a three-way alliance with Cambria and the Elvenwood which should see stability in the region for some time to come. The challenges for the Dwarves meanwhile lie in the North with the resettlement of Ironhold by Mountain Hall and the geopolitics of the area surrounding the new colony. |
