It is not known whether the Gnomes of Miredor outnumber those of
Cambria but they certainly occupy a more prominent role in society.
They are generally seen as belonging to one of two subraces, Forest Gnomes or Rock Gnomes.
Forest Gnomes are very similar to their Cambrian equivalents, tend to avoid humans, and even employ similar protocols
to protecting their woodland homes despite the more favourable status of their race in Miredor.
Rock Gnomes on the other hand live (mainly) openly in Miredor society and tend to occupy one of three roles, inventor,
artisan, or wandering tinker/entertainer. The inventors tend to live in the mountains (which is why they are named Rock Gnomes) where
they can, if necessary mine their own raw materials. They are known for their ability to construct
machinery of all kinds (even if some of it seems to have little practical purpose) and generally prefer to
find engineering solutions to problems rather than use magic. Their most marvellous creations are mechanical
men and beasts some of which are incredibly lifelike.
Artisans are Gnomes who ply a manual skill (such as jewelsmith or tailor) in human society. The Gnomes are quick to learn new skills and are generally
considered valuable members of their community, excelling particular at trades that require dextrous fingers. After
plying their trade in a single location for between
one and five years (depending on Dominion) they automatically qualify for full citizenship.
The third group of Gnomes is more like the footloose
Tabaxi in lifestyle although
they typically wander a slightly smaller territory and often by themselves relying on their magic for protection.
Although wandering Gnomes are often in competition with the Tabaxi for customers the two groups tend to be friendly. Like
the Tabaxi wandering Gnomes tend to not have the protection of law (unless they earned it in another role) but
they do have the protection of custom and also their brother gnomes who rarely forgive anyone guilty of abusing
an individual gnome. Some powerful and well off Gnomes will hire mercenaries to investigate and avenge abuse
of a fellow Gnome. The most famous Gnome in Miredor,
Karaag, would almost certainly do this if the crime occured anywhere
near his home in the
Yellow Mountains.
