Gate to the Otherworld

The Gate to the Otherworld is a legendary artefact given by Athena to her temple in Kelnore to commemorate the one thousandth anniversary of its founding. Although it was most famous for allowing the Paladins of Athena access to the Shadowlands to retrieve the soul of Cyng Kertimac it appears to have been mainly used as a gate to locations on Oerth. The Gate took the form of a heavy stone cube which could only be moved using special apparatus. The Priests of Athena could alter its size as required so that it is said an army might march through it if needed. Although a cube has of course six sides in some way the Gate allowed access to twelve locations although only one side could be used at any one time. Each of the twelve locations could be changed if the proper rituals were performed which was useful as the Empire expanded. The cube it is said could also be reduced in size so that it was a foot across but even in this form it still weighed so much that three men were required to lift it.

The Gate was the second of the Temple's great treasures to be lost, however, as it did not survive the Fall of Kelnore. Indeed it is said that the Gate was the means by which the other surviving artefacts were saved. It is believed therefore that the Gate lies in the magic-blighted ruins across the bay from the City of Tarantis
