Kauran was established over 2,000 years ago by human followers of the druidic faith
with help from the nearby elvish community of
Serpeant Little. It is a walled port built on the remains
of an earlier settlement. When the
Skandiks entered the
area the two allied communities saw them as a useful bulwark against
Quitak and agreed to join their Kingdom. At that time
the Skandiks were not strong enough to force tribute on the two communities and the terms
on which they joined were little more than a mutual defence pact with both communities ruled
by their local laws and customs.
This arrangement worked well for many years but the alliance of Ossary with the Redrock
Orcs was distasteful to Kauran and
the fate of
Horaja shook many of its citizens.
Today Kauran has become a cosmipolitan town where humans make up only 60% of the population
and the druidic faith, although still important to the town, is practised by maybe a third of the population.
Kauran's wily leaders have sought to distance themselves from the Skandiks although
they do not have the military might to break free from them entirely. The Skandiks would be
bound to fiercely resist such a move as the market in Kauran
has become extremely important to them since
Ossary has grown to be a small city and does not have enough agriculture to feed
itself.
