Jotunheim - Tale of the Years

Dates are given in relation to the current time. Many realms in the North have different calendar systems.

c-10000 The North is ruled by Giants from their capital Algart and Jotunheim is just one of their provinces ruled by Frost Giants. Dwarves like all other races pay tribute to the Giants but are considered by their rulers to be one of the most talented and useful groups under their rule.
c-9629 Malgoth appears in the North and slays the entire Royal Family of the Giants in the throne room of Algart.
c-9615 Giants loyal to Malgoth and the Demon Prince Durlach are given Jotunheim as their own province with a degree of self-rule. They set up their capital at Utgart, an old Frost Giant stronghold. The climate in the North begins to cool which is particularly to the liking of the Frost Giants.
-9429 The Frost Giant Skane seizes the throne of Jotunheim overturning the long held hierarchy in Giant society.
-9301 Ulfur, son of Skane, ascends the throne of Jotunheim and immediately begins a campaign of discrimination against all other races including other types of Giant.
-9107 The Dwarves begin the construction of Ironhold as a secret sanctuary from the Giants.
-9065 The fall of Malgoth leads to vast destruction of the lands in the North but Jotunheim being mountainous is relatively unscathed. It is, however, now cut off from the lands to its north by an ever-widening straight of water. Many Dwarves from the foundering lands in the West seek a new home in Ironhold.
-9058 The Giants discover Ironhold and force its Dwarven citizens to pay tribute to Utgart.
-c8500 As the climate begins to recover from the colds induced by Malgoth's rule Frost Giants are seen less and less outside the region of the Ettin Mountains. Meanwhile the strength of Ironhold continues to grow.
-8325 Utgart attempts to increase the annual tribute the Dwarves of Ironhold pay suspecting the Dwarves are more numerous than they pretend. Ir‏onhold responds by refusing to pay the tribute at all.
-8320 After a bitter war the Giants are forced to concede that Ironhold will no longer pay them tribute.
c-7924 Alarmed by the growing power of the Elves in the South King Oskari of Utgart leads a combined army Giants, Dragons, Orcs and Hobgoblins out of the North to crush the Elven kingdoms. The Elves are, however, victorious.
-7921 King Uttur ascends the throne and begins a period of isolationism for the Giants. The Dwarves of Ironhold, sensing an opportunity, expand their trade both within Jottunheim and to the South.
-7731 The Dwarves of Silver Tor, the last major Dwarven hold under Giant rule, are driven out of their home in the Ettin Mountains by a pair of white dragons. They seek refuge in Ironhold.
-c7500 The first human hunters begin appearing on the plains of Lodalf on a seasonal basis and begin trading with the Dwarves.
-7423 The Dwarves re-establish trading links with the Giants
-c7000 The first petty human kingdoms are founded in the lands south of the Ered Augrim. Many enterprising Dwarves start emigrating south to live in human society where their services are handsomely rewarded.
-6604 A trade dispute between the Dwarves and Utgart escalated into open warfare but after an initial inconclusive battle both sides withdraw. The war, however, continues as a series of small scale skirmishes whenever the two sides accidentally meet.
-6532 A peace treaty brings to an end the period of hostility between the Giants and the Dwarves.
-c6000 The human kingdoms of the south gradually consolidate into country-size political units.
-5547 The Dwarves of Ironhold establish a small trading outpost in the south of the Ered Augrim which they call Mountain Hall.
-5136 Rainus I, after a decade long military campaign, establishes himself as the leader of most of the territory north of the Blue Sea and declares himself the first Emperor of the Pelorean Empire. A delegation from Ironhold is invited to attend his coronation.
-4800 The ancestors of the Reavers begin founding colonies on the East coast of Jotunheim.
-c4500 As the Pelorean Empire expands so does the number of Dwarves living and working within the new Blue Sea civilisation.
-3911 Colonists from the Pelorean Empire begin to establish towns on the Lodalf plain.
-3903 The Giants demand tribute from the towns in Lodalf and the Pelorean Empire responds by sending military units to protect the colonists.
-3874 Despite warnings from the Dwarves the Peloreans gradually escalate their conflict with the Giants into an all out war.
-3873 The Pelorean army defeat the Giants and drive them back into the Ettin Mountains.
-3825 The Long Winter. A severe winter disrupts movement on the Lodalf plain. The Giants take advantage of the conditions and reduce many of the Pelorean towns to rubble.
-3824 The Emperor refuses to send more troops to Lodalf and colonisation ceases although a few Pelorean towns remain.
-3151 The weather in the North deteriorates rapidly after the fall of the Pelorean Empire Many human colonists flees South.
-3131 The Giants return to Lodalf in force destroying all human settlements (including the Reaver settlements on the East coast).
-3110 The Giants leave Lodalf (which remains depopulated for a thousand years) and drive their herds south onto the northern plains of Cambria, Reetland and Sankhar. They destroy all human settlements in their path.
-3096 The Dwarves greatly expand Mountain Hall (previously a minor outpost) in order to trade with the Giants.
-2458 The Dwarves of Mountain Hall elect their own King in what is in effect a bloodless coup.
-c2100 The end of the Great Darkness heralds a retreat by the Giants back to the North.
-2006 King Ragnor of Utgart issues a call for all remaining Giants to return to the Ettin Mountains and forbids contact with other peoples (including the Dwarves). Those Giants that remain in the South are frequently slain by the humans retaking their old lands.
-1666 King Drain of Ironhold makes a fateful speech in which he declares 'the Age of Giants and Dragons is over'. He commissions the building of a grand southern entrance to Ironhold and expands the interior halls in size so that if anything they resemble the halls of the Giants themselves.
-1037 The First Northern War ends in victory for the Dwarves.
-624 The Second Northern War. Ironhold is sacked by the dragon Angrax.
-325 The Third Northern War.
-300 Cambria attempts to set up a colony on the West coast of Jottunheim under the shadow of the Ettin Mountains.
-295 The Cambrian colony known as The Caers is destroyed by Frost Giants and its inhabitants slaughtered or enslaved.
-236 Merchants from Reetland set up a trading post on the East coast of Jotunheim which becomes Bremen.
-227 A Reavers raid on Bremen is disrupted by the intervention of a wizard who had been visiting the hamlet. After some negotiation he becomes the first Wizard of the North and the townsfolk build him a tower in which he continues his research.
-224 The village of Good Mead is founded just south of Bremen.
-206 The third of the Three Towns, Dougan's Hole, is founded.
0 Present Day. Ironhold is retaken by the Dwarves.
