Ilanin is a Marwhini stronghold that was much contested in ancient
times (its name means 'War Fort') as it guards a crucial ford of the Fola Salenin. After the defeat of the eastern Marwhini tribes by the
Eastern Horde, however, it became a centre for refugees from
those tribes (most of the population of those tribes had been enslaved and transported into the East) and in due
course it was granted to them as a new permanent home.
The eastern Marwhini tribes, however, favoured the nomadic lifestyle and merely camped there until they found their feet in their new homeland. They manned the fort but built no new structures in the fort or the town. The 'town' of Ilanin is largely run by settled
Marwhini, Kenzin and Logath
traders. The eastern tribes elected a new leader and are now known as the House of Danoc and they use Ilanin only
sporadically as a tribal meeting place although they always have a presence at the fort and store certain goods and equipment there.
The map is keyed as follows:-
- Fort (1). Built on a limestone outcrop looking over the river. Beneath the courtyard is a huge area for
storage and workshops.
- 'Palace' (2). A rather basic but solidly built and comfortable stone building. The House of Danoc's current
leader Alfyth is rarely here but his followers may know in which part of the plains he is currently based.
- Great Market (3). This area is generally filled not only with local traders but with merchants from itinerant
caravans. It is the only paved area in the town. Odds are that at least one Tabaxi or
Vistani trader will be present.
- Crypt (4). This islet on the River Donu is the site of the stone crypt where the leaders of the House of Danoc are laid to rest.
- Eagle's Quarter (5). The old eastern tribes were all named after their totem animal.
This is where each clan
camp when they are here.
- Bear Quarter (6).
- Elk Quarter (7).
- Mountain Lion Quarter (8).
- Square of Play (9).
This is where wandering bards and other entertainers may set up. Unlike many Marwhini settlements Ilanin does
not have any prejudices against magic displays.
- New Market (10). The centre for horse trading.
- Riverside Quarter (11). The town's permanent residents and traders are sited here.
