Golotha

Sited at the mouth of the River Thard Golotha is in an ideal place to exploit the trade between other countries and the Reetland capital of Coranan. Given its advantages, however, it is a relatively small city and there are many reasons why it has failed to develop in size. Firstly its geography allows little room for expansion, surrounded as it is on three sides by the river and on the fourth by a steep and rocky slope. In addition the city itself is liable to flooding and most plans to expand it come to the conclusion that it would be better to abandon the site and start rebuilding elsewhere.

On the other hand the city has an important tanning and leather working industry which contributes well to Reetland's economy and a large fishing fleet. For both these local industries the city is ideally sited. The real reason the city receives so little support from the Reetland Treasury is probably its reputation as the crime capital of Reetland. The city is after all the home of the Golotha Shipping Comapany and its criminal offshoot the notorious 'Shippers'. In addition it has a thriving local Thieves Guild which is independent of the Reetland Thieves Guild. If that weren't enough Golotha is riddled with small underground passages which are frequently partially flooded and which the Watch are understandablely reluctant to go down.

The city is therefore starved of the investment needed to deal with its problems and its 'canals' which are functionally necessary for the city's trade giving the tidal nature of the river at the site have become little more than open sewers. You might think therefore that few Reetlanders would want to live in such a place but if you can tolerate the smells and the crime (and prepared to go armed as you walk about the city) there is a decent amount of money to be made in Golotha by its traders and shopkeepers. In addition the fact that the authorities have their hands full with regular crime means that the city is an ideal place for people seeking freedom of expression in art, religion or philosophy. The city is therefore an exciting place for those who find normal Reetland society stifling and it is not uncommon to find parties of students from Coranan University here letting their hair down.
