Mammon is the Lawful Evil God of Wealth, Lies, Envy, Usury and Debauchery. He has much in common with
Asmodeus in that to the
Church of Pelor he is not a god at all but rather a fallen angel cast out of
heaven for rebelling against the rule of Pelor. Unlike the followers of
Asmodeus, however, the followers of Mammon admit to there being some truth in the Peloreans story and that he was once an angel who championed
the idea that humankind should be free to enjoy beauty and pleasure.
Although his priests use both arcane and divine magic ultimately what binds the congregation of Mammon together are financial transactions.
Followers of Mammon are encouraged to pursue their ultimate desires and ever greater self-indulgences. The Church of Mammon will support
their congregation's obsessions with generous loans, at first freely given but gradually with ever tightening and well-documented conditions
and penalties until at last the supplicants must sign away their immortal souls.
In places where he is worshipped openly, such as
Westcrown, his attraction is that he is a very lawful god who wishes
both to expand trade for the city and also that his folowers should enjoy the fruits of prosperity. The underside to his worship is that although Mammon expects his priests to use cunning and charm he also expects them to be ruthless in collecting debts to the Church.
Mammon is frequently portrayed as a red-skinned humanoid sitting on a golden throne surrounded by supplicants and incredible treasures.
His priests, however, say he can take whatever form he likes. Unlike many gods his worship is not confined to humanoids; avaricious monsters such as
beholders and evil dragons also worship the Argent Prince, as he is sometimes known.
