The toll for overland entry at one of the city's gates is:
- 1 sp per head
- 1 sp per horse or mule
- 1 gp for armed men
- 5% of wares for merchants
All outlanders are told the more important
laws before being allowed through a gate.
Similar tariffs apply at the harbour for entry of goods and people from the sea.
Taxes on slaves are payable on sale at the slave market. They are slightly higher at
10% of the sale price and are a source of tension beween the
Skandiks and the Tyrant.
Penalties for tax evasion tend to be harsh. Fines of 10 x the tax avoided for a
first offence are not uncommon. There are higher fines for a second offence and persistent
tax evasion is punishable by death.
