The River Maven (called Mageven in Zothay) flows by Zothay, providing a natural buffer
against organized raiders. Still, it is not advisable to venture out at night unarmed in
the Riverwatch district
because lizardmen periodically swim through the river to kidnap and kill. They are
encountered in bands of up to a dozen. However, they are usually repelled with losses and
if it were not for their bloodthirsty nature would have given up their raids some time ago.
The area is otherwise safe, and is patrolled at night by followers of
Mitra whose temple
is in this district.
Common men –
fishermen, craftsmen and sailors – live in the larger houses: the wealthy are
put off by the perceived threat from the river. In fact the houses
near but outside the Beggars Quarter are considerably cheaper than those facing the river:
the residents of the Riverwatch
consider their fellow men a worse threat.
