The River Kingdoms are a collection of petty realms situated to the south of
Brevoy. To understand the history of these kingdoms it is first necessary to understand
the six freedoms which all River Kingdom folk subscribe to (except possibly their rulers).
- Say What You Will, I Will Live Free. Let people have their say as long as they don't restrict
me from living my life how I want.
- Oathbreakers Die. Oaths are sacred. Those who break them deserve what's coming to them.
- Walk Any Road, Float Any River . Road and river traffic must not be restricted (except possibly in time of war).
- Courts Are For Kings. Lords are always changing the law. 'Custom' is a better guide as to how to live. Let the lords come enforce their laws if they can.
- Slavery Is An Abomination. Those who were once slaves remember. Taking or holding slaves will be resisted.
- You Have What You Hold. Possession is pretty much 100% of the law.
To some people the River Kingdom folk are pretty much ungovernable and it certainly limits the size of the
kingdom you can aspire to if your method of controlling people is brute force or magic.
There are maybe twenty or so 'realms' in the area. Only one of these has abandoned its culture in recent times
to become more stable. This is Razmiran where their living god resides amongst his people and religion is the glue
which holds the people together. It has to be said that the other inhabitants of the River Kingdoms are not impressed by this turn of events and missionaries from Razmiran although tolerated are generally given a hard time.
