In folk tales there are many different types of Giant and but is difficult now to tell whether these tales have
any historical basis to them. The one type of Giant that all scholars agree existed and may still exist
somewhere in the North is the Frost Giants. These were the Giants who inhabited the area around
Reetland (and
certainly the Northern Plains of Cambria) during the time of the
Great Darkness.
As their name implies the Frost Giants were extremely tolerant of the cold and could withstand the
fiercest blizzards. They were said to have castles high up in the mountains but on the plains they
just built crude shelters of stone. They herded the great beasts of the tundra, mammoth and musk ox
and they followed the migration of those herds across the North.
The Giants were brutal towards any humans they came across and either killed or enslaved them although
they were said to have got on well enough with the
Dwarves to trade with them. As a result when the Great Darkness
ended and there were few Giants left on the Plains men rose up and slew their oppressors. None
have been seen south of the mountains for generations.
