Brinn, a warrior with a fine reputation, was appointed castellan of Dolgold in
1374, following the death of Tristram, the previous lord, in the disaster in
the Northern Waste. At first he was not popular with the villagers as (partly
through lack of confidence) he did not intervene in the village's affairs
to the same extent as Sir Tristram. As time went by, however, the villagers
became more used to him and in 1377 he played a major part in the slaying
of two trolls who had started terrorising the village. Shortly afterwards he
married the Lady Dulcinea, Tristram's widow, and adopted Tristram's son
Gareth as his heir.
In 1381, however, an evil mage Nordegai came to Dolgold searching for an
ancient hold of the Order of the Wolf. Suspecting that there might be tunnels
under the castle that led to the hold he sought an audience with Brinn.
Believing that Brinn was withholding information from him, Nordegia, out of
spite, turned
Dulcinea into a troll.
At first Brinn turned to his brother Marsig,
who he had appointed as castle chaplain, for help as he was a priest of Kord,
God of Battles. The ungrateful Marsig,
however, in conjunction with the high-priest of Kord from Ristenby,
deliberately misled Brinn, because they feared that Dulicinea was leading Brinn
away from worship of Kord. He told Brinn his only hope was to
hire a magician at a cost of at least 5000gps, money which Marsig knew
Brinn did not possess.
Brinn begged a loan from Lord Moreth the richest man in Ristenby but was turned
down and only succeeded in arousing the interest of Moreth's network of spies.
Desperate to
find a cure for Dulcinea's affliction Brinn came to an agreement with
a captured bandit leader to rob the regular shipments of gold from the
Dolgold mine. The first ambush went to plan but the second was a disaster
because of the intervention of Nordegai who coveted the gold for himself.
Both Brinn and the bandit leader Treval thought that they had been
double-crossed and Treval held to ransom two of the castle guards who he
had captured in the incident.
Brinn's problems meant that he was oblivious to he growing strains within
the various village factions brought about by Nordegai's clandestine
activities.
In a difficult position, Brinn confessed his actions to a group of adventurers
from Ristenby who were investigating Dolgold's troubles, hoping that since one
of them was the daughter of his late friend, the elf Tarandril, they would
not look too harshly on his actions. This proved to be a fortuitous judgement
as the adventurers managed to rescue his guards, capture the bandits, kill
Nordegai and heal Dulcinea. Now Brinn is deeply indebted to them and also been
drawn
into a tight circle of mutual self-interest with the Dwarves and local
representatives of the Thieves Guild.
