Although the Seven Dominions are famous for their elegant cities and elven forests a vast amount of the country (particularly in the south) is still untamed wilderness. Travellers in those empty spaces who hear blood-curdling cries not dissimilar to desert foxes shudder and hope they are not the prey of some unseen hunters. The sounds are the calls of the skilled, ruthless and relentless mercenary rangers known as the Desert Screamers. Few escape them once they pick up a trail. Although little is known about the organisation by the general public in Arsiriel Silvertongue's files she names the leader of the organisation as Vaal Gark, a renegade elf. Despite the fact that he personally despises humans most of his rangers are human as few elves are willing to join his organisation. Arsiriel also warns that his demeanour is not that of an expert outdoorsman but rather that of a mild mannered academic whose supreme athleticism is masked by his slight build. She also suspects that many of his victims are not part of a contract with third parties but rather down to his own agendas or whimsical cruelty. The symbol of the Desert Screamers is a gaping red maw on a white field. |
