The Inquisitors are probably the least popular branch
of the Pelorean Church in Reetland.
They were set up in 326 as a specialist group within the Church that discharged the responsibility of the Church
to investigate matters regarding the supernatural. For most of their history they have simply done their job
and the most common result of their investigations is to simply hand back jurisdiction to the secular authorities
having been satisfied that the case actually contained no supernatural elements.
The poor reputation of the Inquisitors rest primarily on two historical incidents in which a high-handed manner
and the inability of other elements of Reetland society to restrain them combined to produce miscarriages of justice.
In the case of the Linchen Witch
Trials scholars now estimate that perhaps 9 of the 20 burnt at the stake were probably innocent while the Southern Ports Inquisition led to a wave of emigration of Southerners from the realm.
These days the Inquisition is much more concerned with cases of heresy within the Church while in the first
instance in cases of the supernatural the
Order of Saint Isabella are often called in to investigate.
