Numeria

Numeria is a wasteland inhabited by fierce barbarians who have traditionally disliked strangers on their lands. As such it would be of little interest to the outside world were it not for a catastrophic event that happened many thousand years ago which the legends of the Kellid tribespeople call the 'Rain of Stars'. It would appear that something very large fell from the sky and broke up just before it crashed into Numeria scattering large and small segments across the land.

On that day many of the inhabitants of Numeria died and in the subsequent years the conditions in the land proved very challenging for the survivors. The tribespeople experienced many new and strange diseases and many new and dangerous monsters roamed across their lands. Some of these monsters appeared to be made of metal rather than flesh and bone and were much harder to kill than the traditional hazards of the plains. The Kellid people were, however, extraordinarily tough and gradually adapted to their new environment. Some even took to making weapons out of the lumps of strange metals they found embedded in the ground.

After a few hundred years, however, some tribes lost their superstitious fear of the crash sites and actively started exploring them. A chieftain camped his whole tribe by one of them hoping to arm all of them with upgraded weapons. Instead, although no one knows how, he set off a huge explosion that killed every last one of his tribe and poisoned the surrounding area for a century. As a result the tribal leaders set a taboo on investigating the crash sites any further and killed any strangers or indeed their own kind who broke it. Although every few decades an interesting object from Numeria would reach the black markets of the surrounding countries few outsiders were willing to risk the wrath of the Kellid to obtain them.

Just over four hundred years ago, however, a very determined explorer Gojan the Sharp changed the history of Numeria. Captured by the Kellid while investigating a crash site he was not killed immediately but rather set the dangerous and challenging trials of manhood which were required for all barbarians wishing to join the tribe. Miraculously he survived and after ten years gained the trust of the tribe to such an extent that the tribal leaders let him continue his investigations at the crash site he had been exploring. After a partial exploration of the site Gojan escaped Numeria and returned to his home city of Absalom where he wrote a book about his experiences. The book caused a storm of international interest in Numeria. Soon organisations and governments around the world took an interest in the region, if only because their rivals appeared to be doing so. An unscrupulous group of merchants and magic users came together to take advantage of the situation and formed the Technic League.

With the vast amount of money at their disposal the League were able to corrupt some tribes into turning a blind eye to their explorations and over time their influence and presence in Numeria has grown. The Black Sovereign, the leader of the Kellid tribes still pays lip surface to their ancient taboos and recently burnt down the headquarters of a dealer in Numerian artefacts who he felt was too visibly flaunting his wares. In addition some tribes like the Ghost Wolves still take pride in hunting down anything they class as alien. This now includes many variants of the local fauna and flora who have been affected by the strange energies in the land.
