Island of Empty Eyes

The Island of Empty Island is a small island on the northerly fringes of The Shackles. As it was long ignored by the Free Captains when a Rahadoum fleet invaded the region two hundred years ago they used the island as a base and built a small fort there. This was only discovered by the Free Captains when questioning captives after the Rahadoum fleet had been defeated.

The tale goes that Free Captain Bikandi, a Mwangi magic user, who had originally questioned one of the captives then volunteered to sail to the island to make sure there were no Rahadoum marines still stationed there. Several Captains on the Council assumed his keeness had resulted from learning of some treasure to be found on the island but most just said 'good luck to him'. When he did not return after several months another captain was sent to investigate but being of a more cautious nature he sent out seabird spies to ascertain if there was any life to be seen in the fort. When the answer was negative the captain did not land but reported back to the Council and it was assumed that Bikandi had either fallen foul of the perils of the island while searching for treasure or found it and sailed off into retirement.

Ever since that day the island has been assumed to be either too dangerous or too uninteresting for further exploration. A verified copy of Bikandi's original treasue map might be the only incentive to persuade a bold crew to land there.

The island gets its name from the great statues that can be seen dotted around its coast, assumed to be of Cyclops although with empty eye sockets. Scholars say that at one time these statues may have contained great jewels for eyes but these would have been looted in ages past, long before the Free Captains came to the region.
