‘The Order of the Wolf is an ancient order of evil which venerates the
Monster-God, Gar, who the cult depict as a huge city-devouring wolf. This being
is mentioned in no other pantheon although some ancient human tribes had a
vision of a wolf devouring the world at the end of time and there may be echoes
of such a being in Elvish mythology.
The Order was banned by the Emperor as far back as the year 135 and although
often surpressed has survived to trouble Carondor in modern times. The priests
of the order tell their followers that Gar walked the Earth in ancient times
and destroyed early human and Elvish cities and towns. He only stopped
devouring civilisation because his hunger was temporarily sated and he sleeps
somewhere in an enchanted cavern.
His progress in devouring the world will continue when he awakes (which is
always believed to be imminent) and nothing can stop him from achieving this.
All human attempts to be civilised are therefore doomed to failure, Gar will
consume them all.
His followers are therefore released from any pressures of morality and can
abuse and subjugate non-believers as they see fit.
The outbreaks of Gar-worship down the ages seem to follow an all too
familiar pattern. A secret temple is set up by a few cultists and gradually
attracts followers from the surrounding area. As their influence grows they
attempt to subvert the local authorities by acts of terror and selective
assassinations. Finally they replace the legal authorities with puppets figures
under their control and begin the virtual enslavement of the local population.
Eventually, however, their activities become evident to temples devoted to good
or orders of paladins. The cult is defeated and the few survivors go
underground only to reappear decades or centuries later.
The cults members traditionally where black robes when worshipping but have
included ‘respectable’ merchants and government officials as secret adherents.
They have a particular dislike of Elves and the slaughter of individual elves
or the massacre of Elvish communities appears to be one of their chief aims.
They claim that as well as devouring the world Gar will also annihilate the
Elvish God Corellon when he next arises. The cult also dislikes magic-users and
will seek to assassinate any such practitioners before expanding its influence
in an area.
