Besmara is the Chaotic Neutral Goddess of Piracy, Strife and Sea Monsters. It is said she started as a mere water spirit who championed
sea monsters but because of this association received offerings from pirates until she gradually became their de facto goddess.
Although she is lawless enough to be happy that possession is pretty much 100% of her law her priests are also sponsors of the Pirate
Code which values crew loyalty and equitable distribution of loot. The centres of her religion are in areas that have become completely
under pirate control such as The Shackles and
Ilizmagorti.
Besmara is often depicted as a raven-haired pirate captain, sometimes with a blue or green tinge to her skin. She is lusty, greedy for
treasure and has little concern with any human civilisation away from the coasts. Most of her temples are repurposed ships or buildings and these are sometimes half-submerged. Her symbol is a skull and crossbones on either a black or red field. Her followers (and even ordinary
travellers on the sea) seek to humour her with gifts of treasure tossed over the side.
