Dagon's Jaws

Dagon's Jaws are a pair of small islands to the southwest of Mokatu Island. They are separated by a three quarter mile channel which hidden reefs make a perilous passage. The larger of the two islands, Big Jaw, is covered by relatively dense jungle and rises to 300' in the centre. On its western side are a number of small beaches which make landing here a possibility for crews wishing to stock up with fresh water from the small streams that can be seen tumbling down the cliffs. Inland there are also tropical birds, foul tempered monkeys, snakes and insects.

The smaller island, Little Jaw, on the other hand rises to no more than 60' with most of that elevation due to the small cliffs which completely surround the island. The soil is too rocky for trees but tall grasses provide cover for the tortoises and the sea birds that nest on the island.

The islands are on the face of it unremarkable but have acquired an evil reputation due to the number of ships that go missing in the area. Nearly a hundred years ago Captain Rann Selagus had a drunken bet with Captain Nagus Fiel that the latter could not sail through the Gullet faster than he could sail round the island. The Devil's Storm, Fiel's ship never appeared at the other end of the Gullett and neither was there any sign of wreckage to be seen. Selagus even searched both islands for survivors to no avail. Numerous pirates will say they don't believe the stories and some have even occasionally successfully navigated the Gullett but still many crews give the islands a wide berth.
