The 'Castle of the Wolf' is one of several locations which appear in old Vistani tales but nowhere else. Scholars are divided on whether these place names refer to completely imaginary locations or merely to secret Vistani camps whose appearance has been embellished to mislead others who seek their position. Assuming the latter some scholars position this particular encampment 'somewhere on the Logathavuld' while others favour Gazar Utal, Gazar Gord or Gazar Barak as likely settings. The truth is that all such conjectures are highly speculative as there are far less mentions of the Castle of the Wolf than say the Castle of the Ravens in Vistani stories. In at least half the tales that the Castle is mentioned the Vistani ultimatlely decide not to risk going there. The castle is associated with wolves, bats and undead but the reason for the reluctance of the Vistani is the nature of the owner of the castle. He is referred to as a 'monster', 'a dark stain on the world' and 'the prince of everything unnatural'. The reasons given for not going there are 'the fear of that place stays in the soul long after you depart', 'the master of the castle wishes with all his heart to break the agreement' and 'he regards us as cattle and that we are not his cattle is something he thinks should be changed.' All in all it wouls appear that there is much less reason to believe that the Castle of the Wolf has any substance behind the myth than for other Vistani locations. It may just be a story to frighten Vistani children. |
